how to ignore automatically updated files

I have some tracked files in a repository which are periodically modified by external automated processes. I don’t want to untrack them, I just don’t want them to appear as modified and I don’t want them to be staged when I do a git add. This should do it:

git update-index --assume-unchanged file [file...]

to undo this and start tracking again:

git update-index --no-assume-unchanged file [file...]

NOTE: I haven’t had a chance to fully test this, yet…

that’s all folks!
