My coworkers and I perform a weekly ritual wherein one, many, or all of us runs about the office reminding each other that this evening the computers will be backed-up, and therefore must not be shut down. Next we skip from office to office checking to be sure that none of our fellows has left early and inadvertantly powered down his workstation.
Now, most of us have nothing better to do at the end of the day, and we enjoy this little dance. But there are those among the group who do have a life, and actually look forward to going home at the appointed hour. For these unfortunate few, I have devised this little program. It does nothing more than reside in your Mac's Shutdown Folder (within the System Folder), and warn you if you try to shut down your machine on that all-important evening.
It will not abort the shutdown. (It will, however, promptly restart the system after chiding you about your flagrant disregard for the sanctity of one's data files.) One may change the day of the week chosen for backup from this same little window.
The program uses the system's (at least system 7.5, sorry) idea of the current date to obtain the day of the week. This day is compared against the chosen backup day (defaults to Thursday for historical reasons). The warning window will not present itself unless the days coincide. The dialog box may be forced to appear by changing the system date before running the program. (Which will cause any keyed applications servers to complain- mildly.)
Although I retain all rights to the program (such as it may be), I have placed this backup reminder utility in the Public Domain. As such, do with it as you see fit (I'd like to get credit for any work I did, though.) Source code is available upon request. I would like to hear from all those who use the program. Features, bugs, etc. The feedback leads directly to improved versions. Besides, I'd like to think that this stuff is actually useful.
Like most freeware available on the net, there is absolutely
NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND!
In other words, use this software entirely at your own risk.
I will NOT be responsible for ANY damage of any sort, real or imagined,
incurred through the use of this program.
The program would not be available if I were not certain that it cannot do any damage, but
one must include the obligatory disclaimer...
It's yours for the asking. (Or utter disregard- take your pick.)
